Privacy policy

Karen is an anonymous app: we don't ask for your name, email or phone. This policy explains what data we keep, why, and how to delete it.

What we collect

Device identifier: a random code the app creates when installed, for your anonymous account. It is not the phone's advertising identifier.
Approximate location: used to show what's happening near you and to place your chismes. Chismes are stored rounded to about 100 m and we never show your address. Only used while you use the app.
What you post: the text, photos, videos, stickers and drawings of your chismes, and the messages you write in chats.
Your interactions: 🔥, 💧, reactions, chismes you join, areas you follow, reports and blocks.
Preferences: nickname, profile granny and language.
Technical data: IP address and basic connection data in temporary logs, to run the service and prevent abuse.

To make the app work: chismes near you, chats, notifications and your areas.
To keep the community safe: handle reports, apply blocks and suspend accounts that break the rules.
To show ads by area (for example, a concert nearby), never by your profile.
We don't sell your data and we don't use it to track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Chismes stop being shown 24 hours after their last interaction, or sooner if they're put out, you delete them, or we remove them. Their photo or video is deleted at that point.
The record of expired chismes (without photo or video), your messages and interactions are kept while your account exists, for safety and moderation.
Technical logs are temporary.
When you delete your account, we delete your chismes, photos, videos, messages, votes, reactions, areas, notifications, reports and blocks.
One exception: if an account was banned by moderation, we keep a one-way encrypted fingerprint of its device identifier so it can't come back by deleting the account. It can't be used to tell who you are.

Only with providers that help us run Karen, and only for that:

Servers and database (cloud hosting).
Photo and video storage (cloud object storage).
Maps: Google Maps to draw the map in the app (or OpenStreetMap maps as a fallback), and Google Fonts for some typefaces.
Place names: the OpenStreetMap-based place search (Photon), which receives the coordinates or text you search.

We may also share information if the law requires it or to protect someone in danger.

You can see and change your nickname and profile granny in You.
You can delete any of your chismes and delete your account with all your data from You → Delete my account.

Karen is for adults 18+ only. If you believe a minor is using the app, tell us and we'll delete the account.
